Sylvie Binder from New York
Fencing for Charity
Fencing sensation Sylvie Binder of Armonk, New York is an eighth grader with initiative! She is ranked 10th in the country within her age group and has won numerous national competitions. In early 2012, Sylvie took the opportunity to blend her love for fencing with her love of the environment. She organized the “Go Green” Beginners Fencing Charity Tournament for fencers ranging in age from 8 to 12 years old. The tournament was a hit with more than 30 young fencers competing. It was so successful, in fact, that Sylvie decided to make the fencing tournament an annual event! All proceeds will again be donated to the Fund.
Sylvie’s “Going Green” in 2013! The second annual fencing tournament will take place on April 20th with a new twist: beginner fencers will be paired with a more experienced fencer who can serve as a mentor throughout the competition. Sylvie said in a letter to the Fund, “I am happy to help raise money for an organization like The Conservation Fund, which protects our farmlands and park lands.”
We’re so happy for Sylvie’s competitive spirit to go for the green and we’re grateful she is helping us protect America’s favorite outdoor places!
