The Conservation Fund Applauds Congress’ Passage Of Bill that Supports Military Readiness By Preserving Land Around Military Installations
Media Statement by Larry Selzer, President and CEO, The Conservation Fund
“The Conservation Fund applauds the U.S. Congress’ passage of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year (FY) 2018, which expresses a commitment to protecting large, connected areas that benefit military readiness, conserves important species and habitat, and maintains working lands through the Sentinel Landscapes Partnership and the U.S. Department of Defense’s Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration (REPI) program.
“I am thrilled that the bill ensures congressional approval of the ongoing Sentinel Landscapes Partnership—led by the U.S. Departments of Defense, Agriculture, and the Interior—and the authority for projects to combine funding from the departments’ existing conservation programs. These provisions will help the departments leverage collective resources in locations where their priorities overlap, increasing the conservation impact. The NDAA also authorizes $75.209 million in FY2018 for the REPI program, which contributes to the Sentinel Landscapes Partnership by funding the protection of working landscapes and critical natural resources around military installations that enable testing and training missions to prepare our service men and women for today's enemies and tomorrow's conflicts.
“I want to commend the leadership of U.S. Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Thom Tillis (R-NC) and U.S. Representatives Madeleine Bordallo (D-Guam) and Walter Jones (R-NC) for helping to make these achievements possible.”
