The Conservation Fund, a national nonprofit environmental organization, has named Jill Long Thompson to its Board of Directors.
A former three-term Congresswoman from Indiana, Long Thompson currently teaches Ethics for the Kelley School of Business and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University Bloomington. Prior to her work at Indiana University, she served as the Board Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the Farm Credit Administration, a position to which she was appointed by President Barack Obama.
“We are pleased to welcome Jill Long Thompson to our Board of Directors,” said Larry Selzer, president and CEO of The Conservation Fund. “Her many years of leadership experience, strategic thinking and dedication to improving farm lending and rural development, especially during her time in Congress and at the Farm Credit Administration, will help guide the Fund’s efforts to protect and enhance working lands in order to provide both environmental and economic benefits to communities.”

Long Thompson’s political career began when she was elected to the Valparaiso City Council in 1983. She was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1989. In 1995, President Bill Clinton nominated her to serve as Under Secretary of Agriculture for Rural Development. Long Thompson was the Democratic nominee for a U.S. Senate seat in 1986 and for governor in 2008. She was the first woman nominated for either office by a major political party in Indiana.
The first person in her family to graduate from college, Long Thompson graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in Columbia City. She earned an M.B.A. and Ph.D. from Indiana University, and a B.S. in Business from Valparaiso University. Long Thompson lives with her husband Don Thompson in Marshall County on a farm near Argos, Indiana.
