The Montgomery Herald, 18 December 2015 – Representatives of Smithers and Montgomery, including Morris Creek, participated Dec. 1-3 in a workshop designed especially for communities bordering national or state parks, forests, and other treasured public lands. The seven-member team met in Berea, Ky., with national and regional experts on sustainable tourism, economic development, the arts, natural and cultural resources, transportation, and branding.

Danny Henley, Hannibal Courier-Post, 11 December 2015 – The site of the former Marblehead Lime Company in southern Hannibal could soon become the newest addition to the city’s expansive park system. During a City Hall briefing Friday, Andy Dorian, director of the Parks & Recreation Department called the creation of the 185-acre wildlife preserve, which will be called the Sodalis Nature Preserve, a “once-in-a-generation park.”

Jack Horan, The News & Observer, 3 December 2015 – Newly arrived elk have found a welcoming home in the mountains and meadows of Western North Carolina in the past 15 years. The numbers and range of the animals have expanded from 52 pioneer elk released in Great Smoky Mountains National Park to an estimated 150-200 bulls and cows in the park, Cherokee tribal lands and private lands west of Asheville.

Chris Lawrence, WV MetroNews, 19 November 2015 – A grant from the Acres for America program will clear the way for the purchase of more land in southern West Virginia which will become elk habitat for the southern coalfields.  The Acres for America program is a conservation organization run by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and financially bolstered by Wal-Mart.

Beverly James, Cedar Key Beacon, 19 November 2015 – The University of Florida’s new Nature Coast Biological Station will receive a grant to evaluate the spotted seatrout fishery in the Big Bend region. The grant, for $20,000, is provided by The Conservation Fund, a national organization that funds conservation projects that improve local businesses.
