While the interstate makes it difficult for animals to meet their basic needs, the roadway also carries the potential for deadly crashes. Now, a new project aims to reduce challenges on a section of interstate that stretches 28 miles near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Sydney Giuliano, Medium — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service partnered with The Conservation Fund to acquire an additional 2,691 acres of forested wetlands to be added to Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. The land will provide essential habitat for migrating shorebirds, waterfowl, and other native species. But wildlife aren’t the only ones that benefit from the riches of these lands. Beneath the soil there are deep historic roots that may help us piece together previously untold stories.

Karen Chávez, Asheville Citizen Times — A one-time Christmas tree farm abutting the iconic Linville Gorge in Burke County is now a sprawling, natural playground for white-tailed deer, warblers and wild turkey, as well as for humans. On the last day of 2020, The Conservation Fund, a national nonprofit land trust, sold the 205-acre Long Arm Mountain property to the U.S. Forest Service.
