Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, Md. (August 21, 2017) – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, as well as staff representatives for U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen and U.S. Representative Andy Harris, joined the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, The Conservation Fund and the National Audubon Society over the weekend to examine new projects that are increasing wildlife habitat protection at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge.

ALBANY, N.Y. —The Conservation Fund announced its purchase of 23,053 acres of working forestland in New York, Vermont and Massachusetts. Known as Cowee Forest, the acquired lands provide critical connections to existing conserved areas and recreational resources, including access to the Taconic Crest Trail and the Rensselaer Plateau, as well as protection for important wildlife habitat within a short drive from Albany, New York, and Bennington, Vermont.

Ann Arbor, MI—​On July 14, 2017, the City of Ann Arbor Open Space and Parkland Preservation Program, also known as the Greenbelt Program, announced the purchase of a conservation easement on nearly 250 acres of farmland in Lodi Township, protecting the agricultural use and conservation values of the private land. Owned by Lloyd and Betty Guenther, the majority of the property is in active agriculture in a mixture of corn, soybeans and wheat, with additional areas of wetlands and woodlands also being protected by the conservation easement.

LOWGAP, N.C.—Natural Capital Investment Fund (NCIF) and the Piedmont Land Conservancy (PLC) announced today the purchase of the historic Camp E-Mun-Talee by Eclectic School of Herbal Medicine and Wellspring Mountain, Inc. The 500-acre property, located in western Surry County and previously home to the Eckerd Youth Alternatives program for troubled youth, includes a 40-acre campsite with 18 structures for lodging and activities. The remainder of the property is under a conservation easement held by PLC.

ARLINGTON, Va. — C&S Wholesale Grocers and U-Haul joined with The Conservation Fund today to announce their commitment to protecting forest-based supply chains. Each company will start by measuring and then offsetting a portion of their wood fiber use—from pulpwood to cardboard paper products—by contributing to the ongoing conservation of more than 8,700 acres of working forestland surrounding Success Pond in Northeastern New Hampshire.
