In October 2017, Shenandoah Forum joined The Conservation Fund and the Town of Mount Jackson to launch the Save The Knob campaign to raise $50,000 to protect one of the Shenandoah Valley’s signature sights. Thanks to the overwhelming support of the community and generosity of the town, the partners announced that we have met our goal! The rocky-top at the southern end of Short Mountain will continue as a reminder of our beautiful natural heritage for generations to come.

The Conservation Fund, the State of Alabama and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced the protection of 251 acres at the Little Point Clear Unit of the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge thanks to funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Gulf Environmental Benefit Fund.

Entergy Texas, Inc., the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and The Conservation Fund have teamed up to plant more than 45,000 trees at Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge, located 45 miles northeast of Houston, as part of a two-year initiative to restore 100 acres of bottomland hardwood forest. Over their lifetime, the trees will clean the air, provide habitat for wildlife, and filter and hold water for communities along the Trinity River as it flows into the bays, estuaries and waterways of the Gulf of Mexico.

The National Park Service (NPS) and The Conservation Fund have finalized a purchase to add 2,494 acres to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Located near the visitor center and along the South Rim of the canyon, this addition to the park will provide access for additional recreation opportunities, wildlife habitat, and potential utility improvements in the park, which saw over 300,000 visitors in 2017.

Eighty years ago President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed into law the “Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act of 1937.” In the last eight decades, more than $122 million – a legacy worth more than $217 million in today’s dollars – from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration program has gone to West Virginia, including funding for the historic creation of the state’s largest conserved block of prime habitat for its new and growing elk population.
