ARLINGTON, Va. — Sportsmen groups, conservation organizations and outdoor recreation groups applaud U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM) and U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) for introducing bipartisan legislation to permanently reauthorize the Federal Land Transaction Facilitation Act (FLTFA), a modified land exchange program for the West that increases recreational access to public lands, supports economic development, and consolidates land ownership. FLTFA is currently expired and unavailable.

Through its ongoing work to conserve the best, and sometimes last, examples of the state’s natural landscape, the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission (ANHC) has recently acquired and protected more than 500 acres in northern Arkansas to directly benefit the habitats for both federally endangered and threatened species of bats.

The Conservation Fund and U-Haul announced the grant recipients of Growing Atlanta’s Green Economy Fund. Funded by U-Haul and its customers and administered by The Conservation Fund, the Growing Atlanta’s Green Economy Fund provides support to green or entrepreneurial programs working in some of the city’s most underserved neighborhoods, including English Avenue, Vine City, Peoplestown, Mechanicsville and Washington Park.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources announced the closing of the final phase of land purchased for the Sansavilla Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in a ribbon cutting ceremony. The ceremony took place at 1:00 PM on site with a program of speakers representing many of the partners on the project: The Conservation Fund, the Nature Conservancy, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, in addition to DNR Commissioner Mark Williams and Director Chuck Williams of the Georgia Forestry Commission.

AZUSA, Cal. — The Watershed Conservation Authority and The Conservation Fund held a dedication event celebrating the protection of the long-coveted “Mt Baldy Ranch” in the Angeles National Forest. Established with the support of the U.S. Forest Service and with a State of California Proposition 84 California River Parkways Program grant, the Mt Baldy Wilderness Preserve provides access to public trails, scenic vistas, watershed preservation, and protection for important wildlife corridors and sensitive habitat.

JOHNSON COUNTY, Tenn. — The Conservation Fund, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, announced the protection of more than 1,680 acres of high-elevation ridges and pristine headwaters in the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains. Located in both North Carolina and Tennessee, the conservation acquisition was made possible with funding from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) and connects more than 127,000 acres of public lands from Cherokee National Forest to Mount Rogers National Recreation area in Virginia.

VERMILION PARISH, La. — The Conservation Fund has been awarded $500,000 through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s (NFWF) Gulf Coast Conservation program to complete the first U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Land Easement project in Louisiana. This grant will be matched with funds from the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service’s (NRCS) Regional Conservation Partnership Program to acquire an easement that will permanently protect a portion of the 5,800-acre, family owned and operated Live Oak Farm, which has provided valuable agricultural and ecological resources for the community and native wildlife for the past century.
