SUMTER, S.C. —The City of Sumter, in partnership with The Conservation Fund, has completed the purchase of a 694-acre property, known as Kel-Sam Farms, located less than a mile from Shaw Air Force Base. Over the next several months, the City intends to place a conservation easement on the property that will prevent development near the military installation and preserve the land’s natural resources. In addition, the City will consider and evaluate opportunities to sustainably manage the property for timber, while offering public trails for hiking, biking and equestrian activities.

MINONG, Wis.—About 1,400 acres of globally significant habitat, which will benefit public recreation and wildlife, including the flamboyant sharp-tailed grouse, has been preserved thanks to a partnership among the Department of Natural Resources, The Conservation Fund and several regional contributors.

LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C.—Today the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) and The Conservation Fund announced the permanent protection of 1,628 acres and more than six miles of Lake Wateree shoreline in Lancaster County. SCDNR will manage the property as part of its Wildlife Management Area program for habitat and water quality preservation and plans to make it available to the public for hiking, hunting, bird watching and fishing.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.—Cheat Canyon, one of West Virginia’s most iconic landscapes and a magnet for outdoor recreation, will be protected for future generations by a conservation partnership that includes The Nature Conservancy, The Conservation Fund, and the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, the groups announced today.

Bossier City, La.—With a grant from BHP Billiton, The Conservation Fund and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) planted 18,000 seedlings across 40 acres at Red River National Wildlife Refuge near Bossier City. The newly restored hardwood forest will provide long-term benefits to wildlife, water and air quality and public recreation opportunities.

Blowing Rock, N.C. — The U.S. Forest Service (USFS), in partnership with The Conservation Fund, has acquired an important inholding within Pisgah National Forest with funding from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), America’s premier land conservation program. Surrounded almost completely by National Forest lands, the protected property will help reduce the amount of USFS resources used on boundary management and allow for expanded public recreational access, including hunting, fishing and hiking.
